Under the provisions of the Virginia Unemployment Compensation Act, an employee who becomes separated from his/her job may be eligible for Unemployment Compensation. The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) administers the Act and determines (1) whether or not an employee is eligible for benefits and, if eligible, (2) the amount of weekly benefit to which the employee is entitled. There is a maximum and minimum weekly benefit an employee can receive under the Act as set by the Virginia General Assembly. Generally, employees will be eligible to receive benefits if they become unemployed "through no fault of their own."
VCU Human Resources' Employer Representative provides a defense for the University in all claims for unemployment compensation. Supervisors will be contacted by the Employer Representative in all contested claims and they may be required to testify at administrative hearings before the VEC.
