Career Counseling and Adult Education
VCU's Human Resource Office of Training and Development works directly with managers and employees to provide assistance with career counseling and adult education issues in the following ways:
- Professional Development Certificate Program
Participation in the Professional Development Certificate Program provides VCU's faculty and staff the opportunity to enhance their skills, knowledge, and abilities.
- Adult Learning Opportunities
Training and Development staff assists employees with information about adult learning opportunities. There is little cost for instruction and course materials in many cases.
- Needs Assessment
The staff work directly with supervisors and employees to help assess career interests and develop the training needed to reach goals.
- Referrals
Our staff provide resources and referrals in such areas as adult literacy, procurement of GEDs, and self-development opportunities.
Leadership and Management Development
Effective leadership is critical to the achievement of VCU's goals and objectives. HR's Office of Training and Development offers the following opportunities in the area of leadership and management development:
Open enrollment workshops for supervisory, management, and administrative levels on just about every current topic -- customer service, change management, reengineering.
Our staff assist managers by providing consultation and/or customized training designed to meet their specific needs. Training and Development staff are familiar with VCU's culture, having worked closely with almost every division within the institution.
Continuous Quality Improvement
The Office of Training and Development supports VCU's continuous quality improvement process in several ways:
Baseline information on the concept of continuous quality improvement is covered in Customer Service Orientation for all new VCU employees. Particular emphasis is placed on every employee's role in the delivery of quality service to patients, guests, and coworkers.
Training and Development offers workshops designed to help supervisors and staff develop critical skills for participating in work teams. Sessions include the following topics:

Quality Tools for Problem Solving
Empowering Employees
Our staff serve as objective facilitators for newly formed teams and/or provide train-the-trainer instruction on team facilitation.
