New employee training

New Employee Orientation (NEO) is VCU's way of welcoming you to our community. NEO will introduce you to the structure and culture of Virginia Commonwealth University, the benefits and opportunities for employees and will give you a chance to meet other new colleagues. You will learn about the benefits and services that VCU offers and have plenty of opportunities to ask questions!

Spend the day with us in NEO and discover all the reasons why a position with Virginia Commonwealth University is so much more than just a paycheck!

What is it?

At VCU, we believe NEO is an important part of the new employee onboarding process. It's a chance to meet your colleagues from across the university, learn more about the university's brand, culture and leadership, and gain high value benefits information that you can use to make your health and retirement benefits selections. The full-day orientation session is interactive and informative and is designed to help new employees develop a positive work experience at VCU.

When is it?

NEO is offered every two weeks and is an all-day event, starting at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. Lunch is on your own from 12 to 1 p.m. and there are plenty of eateries within walking distance.

Where is it?

NEO is held on the Monroe Park Campus at 922 W. Grace St. in room 115. To get here, you can take the VCU campus connector (advised) pdf icon or drive your car. If you drive, please be aware that street parking is extremely limited in space and allowed time (2-hour maximum). Parking for participants is not available in the lot that abuts the building. Learn more about the closest parking options here.

How can I prepare?

Your NEO experience depends on how much you put into it. The more you prepare and participate, the more you’ll gain. Please,

  1. Review and sign the required Policy Checklist for New Hires pdf icon and complete the required online training.
  2. Review Quest for Distinction, VCU's guiding strategic plan.
  3. Watch the welcome video
  4. Arrive early. Arrive on time. Just don’t arrive late!
What happens after NEO?
  1. Complete the post-NEO survey.
  2. Debrief with your supervisor and colleagues after NEO. Share what you have learned!
  3. Encourage your supervisor to complete the post-NEO survey.
  4. Ensure you have enrolled in the benefits options you would like. Be mindful of deadlines pdf icon!
  5. You’ll receive an invitation to meet with us at our quarterly New Employee Coffee Talk to tell us how things are going for you, how we can help and to give us your longer term perspective on the new employee onboarding and orientation process. We hope you can make it!
