Health insurance coverage is not automatic upon employment:
Full-time faculty and classified staff may enroll in the plan on a pre-tax basis within 31 days of employment.
If you waive health insurance as a new employee, you cannot elect coverage after the 31-day period unless you have a life event change or until the next open enrollment period.
For eligible faculty and staff who begin employment on the first workday of the month, coverage can be effective on the first of that month if a completed Health Benefits Enrollment Form is submitted to VCU Human Resources on the first workday. Otherwise, insurance coverage is effective on the first of the following month.
If eligible faculty and staff begin employment after the first workday of the month, the effective date for health insurance will be the first of the month after a completed Health Benefits Enrollment Form is submitted to VCU Human Resources.
Coverage ceases at the end of the month in which you terminate employment or if you are delinquent in your paying your health insurance premiums following the end of the month in which you pay your last full premium.
The state holds an annual health insurance Open Enrollment period in the spring of each year, during which time eligible participants can change their health plan options (for example, add or drop expanded coverage) or membership levels (for example, add or drop dependents).
Life Events Changes
Faculty and staff may make certain changes to their benefits (e.g., add/drop dependents) within 31 days of a qualifying life event. For detailed information and an enrollment form, visit the Life Events Changes web page.
COBRA (Extended Healthcare Insurance Coverage)
On April 7, 1986, the federal Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) was enacted, which requires employers that sponsor group health plans to offer employees and their families the opportunity to temporarily extend their health coverage at group rates in certain instances where plan coverage otherwise would end. The Group Health Continuation Coverage Under COBRA Notice includes information for you and your spouse about your rights and obligations under the COBRA provision. See also the Extended Coverage (COBRA) Handbook. For a COBRA enrollment application, print the Health Benefits Extended Coverage Enrollment form, on the Department of Human Resource Management Website.
